The Faroe Islands recorded 309 detached house sales in 2025, the lowest figure in recent years, according to data from the Faroese statistics agency Hagstova, as reported by public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
Last year’s sales marked a decline from 282 in 2024 and 263 in 2023. The peak year for detached house sales was 2015, when 398 properties changed hands.
Fewer homes were also built in 2025 compared to previous years. Official figures show 229 new dwellings were completed, including 106 detached houses, one terraced house, and 122 apartments.
Apartments accounted for the majority of new housing in both 2024 and 2023. In 2024, 331 new homes were built—203 apartments and 119 detached houses—while 2023 saw 252 new dwellings, with 136 apartments and 88 detached houses.
The last time fewer homes were built was in 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, when only 171 new dwellings were completed. Prior figures include 188 in 2019 and 218 in 2018.
