The Swedish Pensions Agency prevented incorrect pension payouts totalling 507 million kronor (around €45 million) last year and recovered 228 million kronor, the agency announced in a statement on Tuesday, according to public broadcaster SVT Nyheter.

Inger Johannisson, an analyst at the agency, said strengthened controls had led to higher recovery sums, blocked payments, and an increase in police reports in recent years. “To prevent criminals from exploiting the Swedish pension system, the Pensions Agency has intensified its oversight and audits,” she stated.

In 2023, the agency distributed approximately 483 billion kronor to 2.3 million pensioners. Between 2018 and 2025, it filed 1,226 police reports involving incorrect payments of 254 million kronor. Of these cases, 50 led to prosecutions and 44 resulted in convictions.
