Finnish border authorities have cordoned off an area around a drone discovered on the ice of Lake Pyhäjärvi in Parikkala, with an investigation set to begin Wednesday, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The Finnish Border Guard detected the unmanned aerial vehicle on the lake’s frozen surface Tuesday morning. A no-fly zone has been imposed over the area, and access is restricted to secure the investigation.

Yle reporters are on site near the estimated landing location at Uukuniemi fishing harbour, around a few kilometres from the drone. Journalist Ville Toijonen described thick fog in the area, with no other people present at the harbour. The terrain differs from previous drone incidents in Kouvola, featuring islands and scattered summer cottages—though the ice conditions suggest the cottages are currently unoccupied.

“You wouldn’t dare take a snowmobile out there now, and walking would be about a kilometre,” Toijonen estimated.

Yle will broadcast live reports from the scene on Wednesday during its 8:00 AM TV news and at 8:08 AM on Radio Suomi’s morning programme.
