Finnish police have dropped a preliminary investigation into an alleged leak of confidential information related to former ambassador Jari Vilén, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The probe followed a criminal complaint filed by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs in spring 2024. The complaint centred on claims that classified details—connected to misconduct allegations against Vilén, then Finland’s ambassador to Ottawa—had been disclosed to media outlets.

Staff at the Finnish Embassy in Ottawa had accused Vilén of inappropriate and harassing behaviour. After the allegations surfaced, the ministry reported a suspected breach of confidentiality, stating that the leak had compromised the legal protection of both the complainants and the subject of the complaint.

Police interviewed relevant individuals and conducted digital forensics but ultimately decided to terminate the investigation. Vilén, who faced separate accusations of fraud and official misconduct, publicly apologised in spring 2024 and returned to Finland.
