Police investigate attempted stabbing after fight between underage girls in Kouvola
A 13-year-old girl is suspected of attempted manslaughter after a 14-year-old was stabbed in Kouvola’s Salpapuisto park last Tuesday, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.
The Southeast Finland Police Department has confirmed that the incident followed an argument and physical altercation between the two girls, who were known to each other. Authorities are treating the case as both attempted manslaughter and assault.
Detective Inspector Kimmo Kostiainen stated that while the 13-year-old suspect is not yet criminally liable due to her age, police are thoroughly examining the circumstances. “In crimes committed by minors, background factors are emphasized. The investigation aims to understand not only the sequence of events but also the broader reasons behind the act,” Kostiainen said in a press release.
Police have increased patrols in Kouvola’s city center and railway station area, where incidents of violent crime—particularly assaults—have seen a slight rise in recent years. The enhanced presence is intended to deter disturbances and prevent further offenses.
Authorities continue to seek witness accounts from young people who may have been present during the altercation.
