Palm Sunday celebrated today in Christian tradition
Palm Sunday is being observed today, marking the start of Holy Week in the Christian calendar, reports Finnish news agency STT.
The day commemorates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, where crowds laid palm branches—a symbol of joy and celebration—before him. The event begins the so-called “quiet week” or Passion Week, culminating in Easter.
In Finland, the day is also associated with the tradition of virpominen, a custom where children dress as Easter witches and exchange decorated willow branches for sweets. While originally a religious observance, modern celebrations often blend secular practices.
