Man opens fire on police and sets house ablaze in Tornio
A man shot at police officers and set a house on fire in Tornio, northern Finland, on Thursday evening, according to authorities. Police also discharged their weapons during the confrontation, though no injuries were reported. The suspect was later taken into medical care.
Police responded to an emergency call on Varejoentie street around 4 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, a man armed with a firearm emerged from the house and fired at officers, striking a police vehicle. Officers returned fire, but no one was injured, police confirmed.
The suspect retreated inside the residence and fired again at a police car later in the evening. Around 8:20 p.m., flames were seen coming from the house. Authorities suspect the fire was deliberately set.
The man eventually exited the burning building and was transported for medical treatment. As of 9:30 p.m., police stated the situation was still ongoing. The suspect is under preliminary investigation for attempted murder.
