The Faroese Economic Council has dismissed claims by politicians that it is acting incompetently and with political bias during the parliamentary election campaign, according to a report by Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Council chair Johnny í Grótinum stated that the body will continue providing economic assessments—including during the election period—despite criticism from politicians. The dispute follows the council’s pre-election recommendation last year to merge municipalities, eliminate overlapping functions, and implement public sector savings. It also warned that politicians were avoiding necessary reforms, calling it “irresponsible” to proceed with major infrastructure projects like the Suðuroy Tunnel without securing stable financing.

Since the election was called on 25 February, the council has repeated its warnings, prompting accusations from politicians that it is overstepping its role. Johnny í Grótinum has not backed down, insisting the council will not soften its messaging during the campaign.

The Economic Council is an independent advisory body on fiscal and structural policy in the Faroe Islands.
