A man convicted of assaulting a woman in the Faroe Islands has been ordered into preventive detention and expelled from the country, Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The court ruled that the man, who was charged with seriously assaulting a woman on a street in Sandá in April last year, must serve his sentence in detention. The victim survived the attack but suffered severe physical injuries described as “serious, harsh, and highly painful.”

Prosecutor Sara Ann Bjarnadóttir Winther welcomed the verdict, stating it aligned with the prosecution’s demands. The ruling also considered the man’s prior conviction for murder in his home country of Poland 16 years ago, which influenced the Faroese court’s decision.

A jury trial was held this week in the Faroese Court.
