Social Democrat Sjúrður Skaale secured an unprecedented personal victory in the Faroe Islands’ parliamentary election, receiving 10,823 votes—more than half of his party’s total, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Skaale and fellow Social Democrat Anna Falkenberg, who earned 5,304 votes, were both re-elected with significant margins. Their combined votes accounted for over 50 percent of the party’s total support.
The Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin) saw a major surge, winning nearly 45 percent of the vote—a 15-percentage-point increase from the previous election. The Union Party (Sambandsflokkurin) followed with 25 percent, a decline of six points, while the People’s Party (Fólkaflokkurin) received 15 percent, dropping one point. The Republic (Tjóðveldi) fell five points to 13 percent, and the Centre Party (Miðflokkurin) lost three points, finishing with 1.5 percent.
Jóhann Lützen, editor of Norðlýsið and a candidate in the election, called Skaale’s result “exceptionally strong,” noting it far exceeded the roughly one-third of votes typically needed to secure a seat.
Neither the Self-Government Party (Sjálvstýri) nor the Progress Party (Framsókn) fielded candidates in this election.
