A minor girl was arrested in Kouvola, southeastern Finland, after allegedly assaulting another underage girl so severely on Tuesday evening that the victim required hospital treatment, Yle reports. Police are investigating the incident as an attempted homicide.

The suspect, also a minor, was apprehended near the scene in the city centre. Preliminary information suggests the two girls knew each other, though authorities have not disclosed further details about the relationship or motive.

Kouvola’s mayor, Marita Toikka, called the attack deeply disturbing. “This should never happen,” she said in a statement. “The situation shocks and affects all of us in Kouvola. I want to express my support to the young people involved and their families. You are in my thoughts, and I wish you strength in this difficult time.”

Schools in Kouvola resumed normal operations on Wednesday, with city officials monitoring security closely. The local education department has offered counselling support to students, with guidance on discussing the incident provided to staff and families via the Wilma communication platform.

Police have not released additional information about the victim’s condition or the exact circumstances of the assault.
