Emergency services in Oulu investigated reports of unusual vapour emerging from a workshop’s drainage system on Tuesday evening, though no dangerous substances were detected, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

The alert about a potential hazardous material incident at a property on Limingankuja in Oulu’s Äimärautio district was received at around 7:30 PM. Rescue services conducted two inspections but were unable to determine the vapour’s origin. Authorities confirmed it posed no risk to people or the building.

Measurements taken at the site showed no hazardous substances in the air, and indoor oxygen levels were normal. The vapour was described as distinct from ordinary steam. Property owners are now investigating the cause, with rescue services suggesting it may be linked to some form of fermentation process.
