Finnish public broadcaster Yle has uncovered a social media post showing the man suspected of a fatal stabbing in Helsinki’s Malminkartano district holding a knife just hours before the killing.

The image, published on the suspect’s Threads account on the morning of 18 March 2026, depicts him with a blade in hand. That same evening, at around 23:00, he is alleged to have murdered a random passerby near Malminkartano railway station.

Police describe the attack as “particularly brutal and cruel,” involving a bladed weapon and extreme violence. The victim, a man born in the 1940s, was walking home from the station when he was selected at random on Luutnantintie street. Investigators say the assault lasted several minutes.

The suspect’s social media accounts include location tags placing him in Sörnäinen, Helsinki, where the knife photo was taken. Yle verified the account’s authenticity by cross-referencing the username, age, and Malminkartano location tags with public records of the suspect.

Police were unaware of the image until contacted by Yle. Detective Chief Inspector Jari Korkalainen confirmed the suspect has not yet been questioned, as investigators prioritise gathering evidence from surveillance footage and witnesses. Delays in questioning are described as a tactical decision, not related to the suspect’s condition.

The suspect has prior convictions, including possession of a metal-tipped club in 2020 and assaulting a ticket inspector with pepper spray on a commuter train. Authorities also note his history of heavy drug use, including methamphetamine.
