A Finnish animal welfare association battling an outbreak of feline distemper has received around €30,000 in donations in under 48 hours, following an urgent public appeal, reports Yle.

The Kankaanpää Animal Welfare Association revealed last week that some of its cats had contracted feline distemper, a contagious viral disease requiring veterinary care, facility disinfection, and specialized treatment. In a social media post over the weekend, the group warned that the outbreak had pushed its already strained finances to the limit, calling for a “€15,000 miracle” to cover costs.

“The amount of support has surprised even us, and we are extremely grateful,” said Anna-Maija Pellonpää, chair of the association. Donations—ranging from under €1 to €1,000—poured in from private individuals, including contributors from outside Finland.

“Every donation matters to an animal welfare organization,” Pellonpää added.

The shelter, which housed around 1,500 cats last year, has prior experience managing distemper outbreaks. This marks the tenth occurrence in the past eight years. Containment measures include disposing of contaminated items, deep cleaning, and providing affected cats with special diets or supplements.
