A Finnish court has dismissed charges against a psychiatrist accused of failing to report a father’s homicidal intentions to child protection services before he killed his two children in 2021, Yle reports.
The Rovaniemi District Court ruled that the psychiatrist did not breach official duties by not disclosing the man’s earlier statements about planning a family murder. The man, who killed his two young children in August 2021, had revealed his intentions to an emergency doctor a year prior but did not repeat them during psychiatric treatment.
The psychiatrist had filed a child protection notification based on the man’s involuntary commitment but did not include his earlier homicidal statements. Prosecutors argued this omission contributed to the children’s deaths, but the court found the psychiatrist had fulfilled their duty.
The man was later convicted of two murders and ordered to psychiatric treatment. The court determined that, based on the psychiatrist’s assessment, the father had not posed a direct threat to his children during treatment.
