The small Danish town of Bindslev has become a symbol of the crisis gripping the country’s outlying municipalities, where shrinking populations and dwindling tax revenues are forcing drastic cuts to public services, reports DR.

Local officials warn that essential infrastructure—schools, healthcare, and public transport—is disappearing as residents leave for larger cities. With fewer taxpayers to fund services, authorities in Bindslev and similar towns are struggling to maintain even basic operations.

The decline has accelerated in recent years, with rural areas losing younger residents to urban centres. Without intervention, officials say, entire communities could become unsustainable.
