Finnish nature agency closes popular Siikaneva hiking trails due to safety concerns
The state-owned forestry agency Metsähallitus has announced the closure of popular hiking routes at the Siikaneva bog conservation area in Pirkanmaa, citing severe deterioration of wooden boardwalks that pose safety risks, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.
A letter sent to local nature tourism operators on Wednesday states that the nearly four-kilometre network of duckboards has fallen into disrepair, with sections broken, detached, or unstable. While rest areas remain in reasonable condition, accessing them is now deemed hazardous.
Siikaneva, the largest contiguous bog in Pirkanmaa, is also the region’s most significant peatland conservation site. The decision follows an on-site inspection by Metsähallitus last week.
The agency has not specified a timeline for potential repairs or reopening.
