The Faroe Islands’ national art museum, Listasavnið, has signed an agreement with construction firm Búsetur to begin a two-year expansion and renovation project, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports. The museum will remain open to the public during the works.
The project, developed in collaboration with the Faroese government’s property agency Landsverk, aims to modernise the existing building and add new spaces to improve conditions for visitors, artworks, and staff. Plans include upgraded exhibition areas, enhanced learning facilities, and better accessibility.
“This is a major and joyful step in a project we have worked intensively on for a long time,” said museum director Solveig Hanusardóttir Olsen. “We look forward to close cooperation with Landsverk and Búsetur to create the best possible framework for art and our visitors.”
The museum has already begun installing its first new exhibition, which will open shortly. A series of cultural events will also be organised to engage the public during the renovation period.
Funding for the project has been secured through unanimous parliamentary approval, with additional support from the Augustinus Fonden, Louis-Hansen Fonden, Villum Fonden, and Tórshavn Municipality. Construction is scheduled for completion in spring 2028.
