Large heathland fire breaks out near Ålesund

A major heathland fire has erupted on the outskirts of Ålesund, with emergency services deploying significant resources to contain the blaze, Sunnmørsposten reports.

The fire, burning intensely in the Skarbøvika and Sukkertoppen area on Tuesday afternoon, is visible from several kilometres away. The 110 emergency centre has requested a forest fire helicopter to assist firefighting efforts.

Reporters at the scene describe dramatic conditions, with shifting winds causing rapid changes in flame intensity. “Firefighters are working relentlessly to extinguish the fire,” said Sunnmørsposten journalist Jan Erik Finsæther.

Ålesund municipality has urged the public to stay clear of the area due to heavy smoke. Residents nearby have been advised to keep windows closed.
