The Vestfirðir municipality in northwest Iceland has completed a new road to Bolafjall mountain, improving access to the popular hiking and skiing area, RÚV reports.

The 12-kilometre gravel road, built at a cost of 1.2 billion ISK (approx. €8.2 million), replaces an older, narrower route that was prone to erosion and difficult to maintain. The new road is wider, more durable, and designed to handle increased traffic, particularly during the winter skiing season.

Bolafjall, standing at 638 metres, is a key destination in the Westfjords, known for its ski slopes and panoramic views. The municipality stated that the project also included drainage improvements to prevent future weather-related damage.

Construction began in 2023, with funding partially covered by Iceland’s Road Administration. The road is now open to the public, though some final surfacing work may continue in sections.
