Flooding and stranded vehicles on Hellisheiði mountain road
Heavy flooding has left parts of the Hellisheiði mountain road in southwest Iceland impassable, with multiple vehicles stranded, RÚV reports.
Emergency services received reports of cars stuck in deep water near the Hengill volcanic area, where rising water levels have washed away sections of the road. Rescue teams are on site assisting drivers, though conditions remain hazardous due to ongoing rainfall and poor visibility.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued warnings for further flooding in the region, advising motorists to avoid the area. Hellisheiði, a key route between Reykjavík and southern Iceland, frequently experiences sudden weather shifts, but today’s flooding is described as unusually severe for this time of year.
Authorities have not yet confirmed when the road will reopen. Drivers are urged to check road.is for updates before attempting the route.
