Nordic countries and Canada strengthen Arctic security cooperation

Norway, its Nordic neighbours, and Canada have agreed to deepen military and economic cooperation in the Arctic, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced Sunday. The deal, finalised during a meeting in Oslo with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, comes as NATO’s Cold Response exercise continues in northern Norway.

The agreement includes commitments to increase military presence, bolster defence industries, and enhance collaboration on space technology and hybrid threats. In parallel, Norway and Canada updated their trade agreement to promote green industries and artificial intelligence development.

“We face a growing list of challenges,” Carney said during the summit, emphasising shared security concerns in the High North.

The partnership reflects rising strategic interest in the Arctic, where climate change and geopolitical tensions have intensified competition for resources and military positioning.
