Giraffe calf born at Copenhagen Zoo
A giraffe calf was born at Copenhagen Zoo on Tuesday morning, marking the first giraffe birth at the zoo in three years.
The calf, a male, was born to first-time mother Kira and father Oliver. Zoo staff reported that both mother and calf are doing well.
“This is a very special moment for us,” said zoo director Steffen Strahm. “Giraffes are not always easy to breed, so we are very happy that Kira and Oliver have succeeded.”
The new arrival brings the zoo’s giraffe population to five. The calf will be on display to the public once he has settled in with his mother.
Giraffes are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with habitat loss and poaching among the main threats to their survival.
