Political leaders from the Social Democratic Alliance, the Reform Party, and the People’s Party have officially begun coalition negotiations. Kristrún Frostadóttir, chair of the Social Democratic Alliance, met with the President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, and received a mandate to form a government. She expressed optimism about engaging in talks with the other two parties.

The leaders convened at the Althing at 3 PM, concluding their first meeting by 4 PM. Key issues discussed included economic challenges and social welfare. Notably, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir from the Reform Party emphasized the need to reduce the number of ministries, while Inga Sæland from the People’s Party affirmed their commitment to succeeding in these negotiations.

As discussions progress, there is a notable dynamic where former municipal opponents may now align for national governance, with the potential coalition enjoying the backing of 36 parliamentary seats based on recent electoral results. Three prominent municipal politicians from Reykjavík have made the transition to parliament.

The initial negotiation meeting will continue tomorrow, where the leaders expressed a united and solution-oriented approach to governance, with a strong emphasis on economic stability and inflation reduction. Both Kristrún and her counterparts noted the importance of cooperation despite past political differences.

This coalition-building effort comes as the parties reflect on their shared goals and the expectations of the electorate, aiming to address pressing national issues effectively in the upcoming legislative term. The leaders remain hopeful about reaching a consensus that aligns their varied priorities.
