Discussions on forming a new government in Iceland officially started today among the Social Democratic Alliance, the Reform Party, and the People’s Party. Kristrún Frostadóttir, the leader of the Social Democrats, met with Halla Tómasdóttir, the President of Iceland, to receive her mandate for government formation. She expressed optimism about engaging in negotiations with the other two parties.

The three party leaders commenced their talks at the Alþingi, the national parliament, early in the afternoon. They concluded around 4 PM, discussing critical issues such as economic matters and welfare policies. Thorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, head of the Reform Party, suggested reducing the number of ministries, while Inga Sæland, leader of the People’s Party, emphasized their readiness to see and conquer challenges.

Many newly elected members of parliament, along with a significant number of experienced legislators, are participating in these discussions. Notably, nearly a third of the new members are embarking on their first parliamentary term.

After the meeting, Kristrún reaffirmed that the focus would be on maintaining economic stability and reducing inflation and interest rates. She indicated that they would pursue structured negotiations and highlighted the need for strong collaboration between the three parties.

The first formal negotiation meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, with party leaders aiming to work effectively together. Inga Sæland noted a hopeful atmosphere among the leaders, while Thorgerður pointed out that working together would encompass both common goals and the complexities inherent in their different political agendas.
