Google’s recent announcement regarding data center projects in northern Finland reflects ongoing efforts, particularly in Kajaani, to advance the digital economy. The tech giant revealed plans to expand its cloud and data centers in Kajaani and Muhos, acquiring land in Finland for over €27 million.
Kainuu region’s leader, Riikka Pirkkalainen, remarked that the area is evolving into a hub for the data economy, likening it to Silicon Valley. She highlighted that this year alone has seen billion-euro investments in the data center sector, with Google’s land purchases marking a significant milestone. The acquisition is seen as the “cherry on top” of a transformative period for Kainuu.
The municipal leader of Muhos, Kimmo Hinno, expressed optimism about the prospects for similar investments in northern Finland. Notably, he pointed to the area’s robust electrical grid, which provides reliable power sources, attracting international enterprises.
Jari P. Tuovinen, head of the Oulu Chamber of Commerce, noted the surprise of Muhos being chosen for a data center, emphasizing that these new facilities will be constructed from the ground up rather than converted from existing industrial sites.
In 2024, Kainuu’s data center sector is set to expand with significant developments including a new national supercomputer and ongoing construction projects from international companies. Kajaani’s responsiveness to development approvals positions the city well for further growth, with current initiatives already impacting local economy and employment positively.
Overall, the momentum created by these investments is expected to foster a dynamic environment conducive to the growth of the digital landscape in Finland.
