Efforts are underway to reinforce the protective walls at Svartsengi as lava flow has nearly reached their height. Work to increase the wall’s elevation is set to begin tonight and will continue around the clock over the coming days.

Arnar Smári Þorvarðarson, a construction engineer at Verkís, emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting, “We need to raise the walls significantly, looking at an increase of around three to four meters.” He reassured that there is no immediate danger of the lava breaching the barriers in the next few hours; however, the project requires considerable resources to be completed as quickly as possible.

Thorough preparations are being made by the team dispatched this afternoon to start the necessary elevation of the walls tonight. Arnar remarked on the effectiveness of the existing barriers, expressing relief that they have been in place, as the consequences of their absence could have been dire—potentially leading the lava towards the power plant.

The region is experiencing ongoing volcanic activity and seismic tremors, which have solidified the decision to heighten the barriers as a precautionary measure. As conditions evolve, authorities remain vigilant and are actively monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of both the infrastructure and the surrounding community.
