After the recent Jari storm significantly lowered water levels in the Oulujoki estuary, content creator Juho Lehtola took the opportunity to explore. Known online as Sopuli, he donned his wading pants and ventured into the waters of Hartaanselkä, which is one of the most popular fishing spots near the heart of Oulu.

Lehtola’s fishing expedition yielded unexpected results, not in the form of fish, but rather a treasure trove of fishing lures. While he did not keep a precise count, he estimated that he recovered over one thousand euros worth of equipment weighing around 2.8 kilograms, showcasing a variety of lures during the outing.

Utilizing a flashlight and a hook attached to a stick, he scoured the estuary for lost fishing gear. Ultimately, he found several lures and even retrieved a bicycle that had been discarded in the water. Lehtola expressed his belief that many more valuable items abandoned by fishermen likely remain submerged. “I suspect if someone were to lift a log from that spot, there would still be good finds waiting to be discovered,” he remarked, noting the challenge of retrieving such items.

According to Lehtola, the lures he found will either be put to use or passed on to new owners. “I picked a good number for myself, which I plan to use. I’ll probably toss them back out and return to collect more later.” The Jari storm has caused significant fluctuations in sea levels along Finland’s coast, with record low measurements of -145 centimeters reported in the northern area, while southern regions saw higher water levels, including a peak of +122 centimeters in Hamina.
