Recent opinion polls in Iceland reveal significant shifts ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections. The party Viðreisn is currently leading with 22.0 percent support, surpassing Samfylkingin, which stands at 18.3 percent. These figures are close, falling within the margin of error, according to the latest survey from Prósents.
Supporting data from another poll shows Viðreisn at 20.9 percent, while Samfylkingin was ahead at 22.7 percent. The middle-ground party, Miðflokkurinn, is at 13.5 percent, experiencing a slight decline of two percentage points, while Flokkur fólksins has gained just over one percentage point, reaching 12.5 percent.
Alarmingly, the ruling parties are facing a historical low, with the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn) receiving just 11.5 percent of support, making it the fifth largest party. Its previous polling figures were higher, around 12.0 and 12.3 percent in recent weeks. Furthermore, Framsóknarflokkurinn is in a precarious position, measurable at 4.4 percent, indicating it may struggle to secure any parliamentary seats.
This tonal shift leaves the coalition parties collectively with merely 18.9 percent. In contrast, the last poll indicated much higher support for these parties, with the Independence Party at 24.9 percent.
The latest numbers also show the Pirate Party at 6.7 percent and Socialists at 6.4 percent, both managing to secure adequate support for parliamentary representation, unlike their less fortunate counterparts, the Democracy Party and Ábyrg framtíð, which remain below the required threshold.
As Iceland moves closer to the election date, the fluctuating support for various parties could lead to a reshaped political landscape.
