Kjetil-André Ward reveals sexual assault experience, sparks discussion on media impact in Norway
Kjetil-André Ward, a 32-year-old stylist and influencer, has disclosed that he was a victim of sexual assault in 2008. He acknowledges the profound impact that media coverage of such cases can have on individuals. “I was afraid I wouldn’t be believed, which is part of why it took me so long to speak out,” he remarked.
Anette Kjeldstedt, who heads Smiso Vestfold and the Sexual Abuse Help Line, noted a spike in calls correlating with increased media attention on sexual assault. “While we always receive calls, the numbers rise significantly during media coverage,” she stated. Kjeldstedt highlighted cases such as the Frosta and Høiby affairs, which can evoke strong emotions for those with past experiences of abuse.
Recent weeks have seen heightened media focus on both the Frosta and Høiby cases, involving multiple victims. The Frosta case, in particular, where Arne Bye faces charges for assaulting 87 patients and misusing his authority, has shocked many. “What makes Frosta so unique is the sheer number of victims involved and how it all started with someone bravely speaking out,” said Rannveig Kvifte Andresen, the director of Dixi Resource Center Against Rape.
Ward was inspired to share his own experiences after hearing a close friend’s story. He believes that public discussions about abuse can diminish feelings of shame and isolation among survivors. He emphasized that openness is crucial, as hearing about similar experiences can encourage others to speak up.
Kjeldstedt stressed the importance of having someone to talk to, as many find the help systems lacking. The increased calls to help lines reveal how vital these services are for individuals seeking support after trauma.
