Arne Bye faces trial for assaulting patients and abusing medical position in Norway
In a shocking trial, Arne Bye faces charges for the assault of 87 patients, alongside allegations of abusing his medical position to engage sexually with 94 women between 2004 and 2021. While the court was shown video evidence of an assault during a gynecological examination, Bye admitted to three counts of rape and 35 instances of misconduct.
The first of three victims to testify described her experience as surreal, likening it to a horror film. Bye reportedly assaulted her by inserting his fingers and various objects into her during the examination. The victim expressed her disgust during her testimony, emphasizing that the doctor’s documentation was misleading and questioning the professionalism of his actions.
The footage, which spanned 15 minutes, captured the victim’s evident discomfort and distress, although the media was only allowed to hear the audio. Upon viewing the video, Bye acknowledged that the examination was “inadequate,” admitting he failed to recognize the suffering he caused the victim. He attributed his actions to a fear of missing something important during the examination.
The victim felt a mix of relief and sorrow following Bye’s admission. She struggled to process the severity of the situation when it first came to light in 2022, initially believing Bye’s explanations before understanding the reality of the abuse through expert testimonies. Despite her anger towards him, she expressed a complex sympathy for the pain he is now experiencing, referencing his former reputation and the impact of his actions.
