A man known as Jaguar Do has received a five-year prison sentence for attempted murder following a knife attack in Reykjavik. This ruling, issued by the Landsréttur court, overturned an earlier two-year sentence from the Reykjavík District Court, which had classified the act as a serious bodily injury rather than attempted murder.
The incident occurred on November 24 last year, when Jaguar Do repeatedly stabbed another man, resulting in multiple wounds and lacerations. Although initially charged with attempted murder, the District Court concluded it was not proven that he intended to kill, citing that he claimed to have avoided inflicting fatal injuries.
However, the Landsréttur judges found it hard to believe Jaguar Do’s assertion that he had taken care to prevent the man’s death, noting that the defendant had attacked the man when he attempted to flee. The judges determined that Jaguar Do did not seem concerned about the outcome of his assault.
Consequently, the higher court convicted him of attempted murder, enhancing the sentence to five years in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to pay the victim two million Icelandic krónur in compensation, which is half a million more than the District Court had mandated.
