Serious collision on Highway 5 in Mikkeli results in one fatality

Late Thursday evening, a serious collision occurred on Highway 5 involving a passenger car and a truck. A local man, approximately 35 years old, tragically lost his life in the accident, which took place between the Pitkäjärvi and Tikkala junctions in Mikkeli. At the time of the incident, the road surface was wet but not icy.

Authorities are investigating the case as a severe case of drunk driving and a gross endangerment of road safety regarding the driver of the passenger vehicle. The highway was completely closed to traffic throughout the night until around 5 a.m., with a detour routed via the old Otavantie road.
