Majority of Icelanders support Teachers’ Union strike actions according to Gallup poll
A recent Gallup poll indicates that a majority of Icelanders back the strike actions proposed by the Teachers’ Union. Support for the actions is particularly strong among women and younger individuals. While 58% of respondents are in favor, 30% oppose, and 12% are indifferent. Notably, support is highest among the 18-29 age demographic, with over three-quarters expressing their approval. Conversely, less than half of those aged 50-59 support the strikes.
When analyzing educational attainment, a little more than half of individuals with primary or secondary education back the initiative, contrasted with around two-thirds of university graduates. Voters from the Left-Green Movement show the most robust support at 75%, while a majority of voters from other parties, except for the Independence Party and the Centre Party, also favor the proposals.
Support diminishes among voters of the Independence and Centre parties, as just over half do not support the strike actions. These two groups are the only ones in the survey where a majority is against. The survey was conducted from November 7 to November 17, with a total sample size of 1,668 and a participation rate of 53.4%.
