Power outages hit Grindavík due to damage on Svartsengi line as lava flows near Njarðvík
Grindavík is currently experiencing power outages due to damage to the Svartsengi line that connects the town to the Svartsengi power plant. Lava has flowed over the Njarðvík line, though the director of HS Veitur asserts that it remains secure. Despite the lava flow, hot water is still being delivered through the Njarðvík line, and there are hopes that this will continue. Residents have been advised to check the company’s website for updates regarding potential service disruptions.
Páll Erland, CEO of HS Veitur, stated that as of now, the hot water supply has not been affected. The line was reportedly protected, and the possibility of such an event had been anticipated. Power supply to nearby areas, including Vogar and Reykjanesbær, continues uninterrupted, utilizing the Suðurnesja line.
This morning, a fiber optic cable connecting to Grindavík was disrupted, but the spokesperson for the civil protection authorities noted that the impact of this issue should be minimal. It had also been planned for such outages, with traffic being redirected.
In addition to these developments, volcanic activity continues on the Reykjanes Peninsula, with ongoing seismic disturbances prompting increased monitoring. While some infrastructure is threatened, experts currently believe that essential services are not at risk. The local community is being kept informed as the situation evolves, particularly in light of the eruption’s unexpected yet manageable nature.
