In an unusual twist to electoral campaigning, Icelandic politicians showcased their culinary skills during a cooking competition organized by the Chef’s Club. The event took place in the training facilities of the national culinary team and involved eight candidates from various political parties, steering the focus away from traditional political discourse towards food preparation.

Judging the competition were prominent culinary figures, including Iceland’s national culinary team coach, an experienced team captain, and a competitor from the prestigious Bocuse d’Or competition. The contest featured tasks such as preparing dishes from choices of fish or lamb, along with creating a proper butter sauce and handling vegetables and potatoes. Among the potato varieties available, only one candidate, Bjarni Benediktsson, opted for the blue potatoes.

The chair of the Chef’s Club expressed surprise at the contestants’ performance and stated that while they had yet to determine scores, previous competitions awarded gold for 90 points or more and silver for scores between 80 and 89. He noted signs of several potential gold-level performances.

The initiative aimed to strengthen connections between politics and the culinary world. The chair emphasized the importance of understanding that success in culinary arts, especially on an international level, requires backing from political leaders to ensure continued support and development of Icelandic ingredients.

This engaging event presented a refreshing angle to political campaigning, blending a display of culinary talent with an effort to foster collaboration between the political landscape and the culinary sector in Iceland.
