Republican Party leader seeks coalition talks after Vágur municipal elections

Following the recent municipal elections, Arni D. Brattaberg from the Republican Party swiftly reached out to the three political lists in the municipality of Vágur for negotiations on election night once the results were clear.

Brattaberg expressed his hope for a broad coalition involving all three lists. “The atmosphere within the Social Democratic Party was not positive, which naturally reflected in the negotiations,” he stated.

It became evident that the Social Democrats and the Union Party were forming a coalition, effectively sidelining the Republicans during discussions. “As we heard in the media, the situation was somewhat lukewarm, and we merely waited to see what would unfold. The proposal from Bjarni Johansen indicated a lack of agreement and that nothing had been signed yet. This presented us with an opportunity that we felt compelled to seize since we were on the sidelines,” Brattaberg explained regarding the process that led Johansen to collaborate with the Republicans.

A cooperation agreement between the Social Democrats and the Union Party was ready to be signed over the weekend, yet the current mayor, Bjarni Johansen from the Social Democratic Party, declined to endorse it. Shortly after, Brattaberg called the newly elected city council to a meeting the following day, focused on establishing a new council structure.
