Kristi Raik, deputy director of the Estonian International Centre for Defence and Security, emphasizes the importance of investigating the link between the recent undersea cable damages in the Baltic Sea and the compromised Balticconnector gas pipeline. With concerns heightened by the presence of a Chinese vessel in the area during these incidents, she highlighted the necessity of exploring any potential connections to the Balticconnector.

Despite efforts from authorities, clear information regarding the damage to the gas pipeline between Estonia and Finland remains elusive. Raik expressed doubt about China’s willingness to thoroughly investigate these incidents, raising concerns about broader geopolitical implications as China and Russia continue to strengthen their strategic partnership.

Raik noted that both nations have a vested interest in developing maritime traffic, which could create opportunities for orchestrating attacks aimed at damaging critical infrastructure. The precarious nature of the situation has raised alarms regarding the potential for future incidents and the importance of vigilance and collaboration in addressing these evolving threats.
