Residents in Ringkøbing-Skjern raise concerns over renewable energy projects as Climate Minister Aagaard advocates for local autonomy

Residents of Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality are voicing concerns over the increasing number of solar panels and wind turbines in their area. Despite this local discontent, Climate Minister Lars Aagaard remains firm, emphasizing that the decision on the number of renewable energy installations rests with individual municipalities, and he supports this autonomy.

Aagaard has no plans to penalize municipalities that decline to host renewable energy projects. Instead, he advocates for positive incentives, suggesting that communities allowing for more construction will receive additional financial support.

In 2023, Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality generated a total of 1,460,473.82 MWh from wind and solar energy. One local farmer, Torben Lund Hansen, who lives near a significant solar installation, is skeptical about the financial incentives. He argues that monetary gains do not justify the use of agricultural land for solar panels.

The minister has endorsed an agreement aimed at quadrupling the country’s solar and wind energy production by 2030. Aagaard stated the necessity of expanding green energy sources across Denmark to secure energy independence. Currently, Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality leads in renewable energy production, generating ten times more than the national average.

However, Aagaard acknowledges the potential issues if too many municipalities follow suit in opposing renewable energy projects. He cautioned that while one municipality may choose to reject renewable developments, widespread resistance could become problematic.

A community meeting in Ringkøbing-Skjern is scheduled for Wednesday evening, where residents near Ådum will discuss a proposed 180-hectare solar energy project.
