Disappearance of Geirfinnur Einarsson in Keflavík remains unresolved after 50 years

The disappearance of Geirfinnur Einarsson, which took place 50 years ago, remains an unresolved case within police systems. According to prosecutors, any new information that emerges regarding this case will be treated like evidence in other criminal investigations.

On the anniversary of Einarsson’s disappearance in Keflavík, authors of a new book on the case attempted to present information they believe could shed light on the mystery. However, they reported being rebuffed by both the prosecution office and police authorities when they sought to share their findings.

Jón H.B. Snorrason, a prosecutor at the National Prosecuting Authority, explained that new information will not be handled any differently than in other cases. He noted that if there’s a basis for investigation, the process would commence similarly to other criminal cases. Law enforcement in the relevant jurisdiction would start investigating by interviewing individuals with pertinent information or evidence.

The National Prosecuting Authority oversees investigations and prosecutions nationwide, and according to Snorrason, the case is not yet at that stage. He emphasized that new information points to the possibility of a fresh start in this ongoing case, often referenced as the Guðmundar- and Geirfinnsmál. He acknowledged that due to the emergence of new details, the case remains unresolved and thus warrants renewed attention.
