Syðra Javnaðarfelag to reconvene over Bjarni Johansen’s mayoral situation in Vágar

The Suðuroyar Syðra Javnaðarfelag did not reach a conclusion regarding the case of Vágar’s Mayor Bjarni Johansen in their meeting yesterday and will reconvene later today to continue discussions.

“We are still reviewing the matter, and since yesterday’s meeting was not conclusive, we will meet again at four this afternoon,” stated Jens Petur Brattalíð, the acting chair of the organization, while the actual chair, Arni Georg Johansen, is unavailable. Arni Georg Johansen is the brother of Bjarni Johansen.

When asked whether there was a plan to expel Bjarni Johansen from the party, Brattalíð refrained from commenting.

Brattalíð acknowledged that Bjarni Johansen lacks support within the organization but noted that the group cannot prevent individuals from acting as they wish. The pressing issue at hand is whether Bjarni Johansen’s coalition agreement with the Javnaðarflokkin and the Sambandsflokkin will have repercussions, particularly since he has now allied with Tjóðveldi to form a government.

Under the collaboration with Tjóðveldi, Bjarni Johansen was expected to serve as mayor for the next four years.

Levi Mørk, who was the lead candidate for the Javnaðarflokkin in the recent municipal elections, had previously had an agreement to become mayor. He has urged the party to address the situation following Bjarni Johansen’s alliance with Tjóðveldi. However, Aksel V. Johannesen, the Javnaðarflokkin chair, indicated that he would not engage in discussions on the matter, expressing concern over the political situation in Vágar and emphasizing that it is up to the local party to handle.

In last week’s municipal election, Levi Mørk received 131 personal votes, while Bjarni Johansen had 108 votes, placing him second on the Javnaðarlisti.
