The Central Criminal Police of Finland has launched a preliminary investigation into the severing of a submarine cable connecting Finland to Germany. At this stage, the investigation is being pursued as a case of serious property damage and severe disruption of telecommunications. The decision to initiate the inquiry was made today in collaboration with the National Prosecutor’s Office.

The cable in question, known as C-lion 1 and owned by Finnish state company Cinia, was cut early Monday morning. Additionally, a data cable that runs between Sweden and Lithuania also sustained damage on Sunday.

The Central Criminal Police has communicated with the Swedish police and plans to establish a joint investigation team with them. Further updates on the situation are expected.
