Danish Navy monitors Chinese cargo ship in Kattegat region on behalf of Sweden

The Danish Navy is actively engaged in the Kattegat region, monitoring a Chinese cargo ship that has dropped anchor. This operation is conducted on behalf of Sweden, involving multiple Danish authorities. Since the previous day, several naval vessels have been tracking the Chinese ship closely as it navigated from the Baltic Sea, through the Great Belt, and into the southern Kattegat. Reports indicate the ship has been stationary for several hours.

In recent days, the vessel passed over two underwater fiber optic cables that subsequently failed to function. Authorities from various nations suspect these cables may have been sabotaged. One cable, which connects Sweden and Lithuania, was damaged on Sunday morning, while another linking Germany and Finland ceased operations late Monday night.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated at a press conference that there is widespread skepticism regarding the idea that the cables were cut accidentally. Both cables were reportedly damaged within what is defined as Sweden’s economic zone. The military confirmed their presence in the region via the social media platform X but provided no further details on the matter. Updates to this situation are anticipated.
