Government considers tunnel options for Vestmanna amid budget discussions in Denmark

The government has not yet made a definitive decision regarding a tunnel project to Vestmanna; however, funds have been allocated to explore potential solutions.

Currently, two main options are being considered. The first is a tunnel from Kvívík to Vestmanna, measuring approximately 4.2 kilometers. The second option involves a tunnel from Leynar to Vestmanna, which would be around 6.2 kilometers long. Geological surveys have already been conducted.

According to Dennis Holm, a government minister, the preliminary cost estimates for these projects are substantial. The Kvívík-Vestmanna tunnel is projected to cost around 650 million Danish kroner, including a 40% risk contingency. The Leynar-Vestmanna tunnel is estimated to be more expensive, with costs around 950 million kroner, also factoring in a 40% contingency.

In discussions with local authorities, Landsverk has been in contact with both Kvívík and Vestmanna municipalities regarding the routing of these tunnels. Holm added that in the draft budget for 2025, plans are suggested to commence construction of the Vestmannunnel after completing the Tjørnuvíkar tunnel.
