The sailing season for the Saimaa Canal will conclude today, and it will be ending earlier than planned due to a lack of vessel traffic. The canal authorities determine the length of the sailing season and set the opening date annually. This year, the season commenced on June 24 and was originally scheduled to run until December 31.
The Saimaa Canal stretches 43 kilometers, with nearly half of its length located in an area leased from Russia. Following the decision to close the canal, neither cargo nor passenger vessels will operate through it. Throughout the sailing season, navigation has been governed by directives from the national government and sanctions imposed by the European Union.
The management and operational guidelines of the Saimaa Canal are aligned with a leasing agreement ratified by parliament, ensuring that all activities through the waterway adhere to established protocols.
