The Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Qualification Committee has deemed Svanhildur Hólm Valsdóttir suitable for an interim ambassadorial position representing Iceland in Washington, D.C. Despite past criticisms of her appointment due to her connections with a former minister, the committee has now made its assessment public.

The committee submitted its findings in December, evaluating Svanhildur’s qualifications as both objective and subjective measures of her experience. Under government employment laws, an interim ambassador must possess higher education and experience in international or foreign affairs, or relevant skills suitable for the role.

According to the committee’s report, Svanhildur has built a reputable profile as a manager, leader, analyst, and innovator during her tenure at the Chamber of Commerce and as an assistant to key government officials in finance and economics, as well as to the leader of a political party. She also boasts substantial experience in media.

Svanhildur views the ambassadorial role as fundamentally service-oriented and is passionate about contributing positively. She intends to leverage her extensive knowledge from politics, business, media, and culture to advocate for Icelandic interests in the United States and other countries under the jurisdiction of the Washington embassy.

Svanhildur has assumed her duties at Iceland’s embassy in Washington and presented her credentials to President Joe Biden in September.
