Ministry investigating municipal election conduct in Skúvoy, Faroe Islands

The Ministry of Justice is investigating a situation regarding the recent municipal election in the Skúvoy community, following concerns raised by a resident about the election conduct.

Nella Festirstein, the Chief Executive, confirmed that a citizen has approached the Ministry with allegations of irregularities during the election process. She emphasized that the proper procedure requires such concerns to be reported to the local council first, and they will provide guidance to the individual on how to proceed.

It remains too early to determine the next steps in this matter, according to Festirstein. Reports indicate that the complaint involves the absence of staff at polling places at certain times during the election.

Kim Eidesgaard, the chairman of the election committee in Skúvoy, also acknowledged the complaint related to Tuesday’s municipal election but stated he did not have further details. Eidesgaard affirmed that three representatives were present at the polling stations throughout the election. During their lunch break, one committee member left, but a substitute was present in their stead.

However, when committee members briefly stepped away, such as for restroom breaks, no alternates were called in, Eidesgaard noted.

In Skúvoy, 34 individuals were eligible to vote, with 30 actually casting their ballots. The election results show Harry Jensen receiving 14 votes, Jóannes í Hoygarðinum with 10, and Jákup Andreas Thomsen obtaining four votes.
