At Helsinki’s Kansalaistori, demonstrators have gathered to display banners in both Finnish and Russian, proclaiming messages such as “Against Putin and War” and “Victory for Ukraine – Freedom for Russia.” The strong winds of the day do not deter their spirits, indicating this is not their first protest.

Aleksandr Nesterov, who traveled from Forssa, emphasized the importance of opposing the war and expressed the need for all who can to join in. He aims to show that anti-war Russians do exist and hopes to connect with like-minded individuals. “I want to demonstrate to people in Russia that they are not alone. Even if they cannot take to the streets and speak freely, we are here for them,” stated Darja Drobysheva, highlighting the plight of political prisoners in Russia who endure horrific conditions.

Chants resonated throughout the square, calling for “Victory for Ukraine! Imprison Putin! Freedom for political prisoners!” The event attracted many Finnish-Russian participants, and passerby stopped to engage in conversation with the demonstrators.

The ongoing war has now lasted for 998 days, and those present called on the Finnish and European governments to sustain their support for Ukraine. Organizer Irina Vesikko made a compelling appeal for Western nations to continue their active backing, asserting that peace in Europe is closely tied to Ukraine’s situation.

As the protest concluded, participants marched to the Russian embassy, demanding the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine and the release of political prisoners. The gathering featured white-blue-white flags that symbolize peace and opposition to the current regime, contrasting against the Russian tricolor, which now represents war and oppression for many.
