Kristrún Frostadóttir, the leader of the Samfylking party, has expressed her respect for Þórður Snær Júlíusson’s choice to decline a seat in Parliament should he be elected. This decision followed discussions over the past few days between them, leading him to arrive at this conclusion due to the backlash stemming from his previous blog posts, which have sparked controversy.
Kristrún stated, “This is, of course, his decision, and I fully respect it. I have always had a positive impression of Þórður, who has been a strong ally. Ultimately, this is his conclusion after reflecting on the issue recently.”
When asked about the potential impact of this decision on the Samfylking party’s standing, she refrained from making any predictions, noting that Þórður Snær set a commendable precedent by making this choice.
In response to whether she felt pressured to address the situation, Kristrún acknowledged that people have differing opinions, but ultimately, it is Þórður’s choice. She clarified that there had been no promises of a position or role for him had he chosen not to take the parliamentary seat, adding, “It’s too early to discuss anything like that. We don’t even know the outcome of the elections yet.”
As the 2024 parliamentary elections approach, the Samfylking party has seen a notable decline in support among female voters in recent days, indicating shifts in the political landscape as it navigates the challenges presented by internal and external factors.
