In a recently released video, a controversial recording has surfaced involving Gunnar Bergmann, the son of Jón Gunnarsson, a member of the Independence Party in Iceland. The footage shows Gunnar discussing his father’s belief that support for the party would increase if whaling were to be reinstated.

Gunnar revealed that his father secured the fifth position on the Independence Party’s list for the Southwest constituency in exchange for gaining access to the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Fisheries with the intent to enable whaling once again. The implication was that such a move would bolster the party’s popularity.

The source of the video is still unclear, although there are indications that it may have been orchestrated by the private investigation firm Black Cube, which may have set a trap for Gunnar, capturing their conversation.

Gunnar articulated in the footage that his father was optimistic regarding the potential for an uptick in support for the Independence Party resulting from the issuance of whaling permits. The situation has raised questions, particularly since it has been reported that Bjarni Benediktsson, the leader of the party, removed Jón from his roles associated with whaling permit matters on the same day that inquiries were first made about this issue. The National Commissioner of the Police announced an investigation into the matter, further entrenching the political intrigue surrounding the upcoming parliamentary elections.
